Lin — Nowness Asia

While processing her grief over the passing of her paternal grandmother, director Heather Wang made a short film to reconnect with her, imagining the journey of her spirit.

Lín is titled after her grandmother’s first name, “Lín Zhēn (林贞)”, which means "the holy woods.” In pinyin, however, lín can also suggest “never-ending rainfall.” It also sounds similar to the word for “spirits” and the number zero in Mandarin.

Set in the snow, Lín is a fashion and movement piece in a landscape that feels lonely but beautiful. We follow a spirit’s one-day journey of returning to reality, only to become lost in the snow, before returning to the underworld where she belongs.
